My Church Project

On these pages there is an ongoing project which I set myself towards the end of 2003. Originally intended to last just one year - 2004 - due to various factors it has very much become 'on-going'! It was hoped that 2005 would see the project complete but, alas, it has spilled over to 2006. Let's hope the days I have planned to finish it are fine.
The original brief was to photograph and catalogue every church with a Tower, Spire or Steeple that is marked on the Explorer No.287/West Pennine Moors Ordnance Survey map. As at 11/03/2006 I had visited the marked sites of 72 Churches. Of these 66 remain as places of worship, four have been converted to another use and two have been demolished.
Dare I say it but I was looking at doing another map after this one!!

Anyway, the reason for this madness is that I have always had some sort of, er, fascination with these types of churches. I don't really know why but for some reason towers and steeples are a Church and maybe that is the attraction. If there isn't one then I class it as a chapel.
If I see a Church that fits this ideal, and the camera is handy, It gets photographed.
If you wish to find a church in particular then they are listed alphabetically by name in the CHURCH INDEX.

The following links take you on each journey's route I have completed so far. Along with the Church Name is the Grid Reference (all prefixed SD) and a brief description of what my initial thoughts were.
